Background
As a signature application in the 5G era, autonomous driving is drawing interest and investment from worldwide. A number of autonomous vehicles have been used for goods delivery and people transportation in certain specified areas. Given the unattended scenario with potential safety hazards, it is a must to ensure high-speed and uninterrupted connectivity between the vehicle and the command center, as delay in data transmission may lead to huge losses and even threats to life.
There are a variety of devices on board, which collect business data as well as monitor the vehicle status. Those data need to be sent to the management center so that problems can be detected and handled earlier. Meanwhile, users need to check the vehicle status and get notifications via mobile app.
InHand’s 5G Connectivity Solution for Autonomous Vehicles
An on-board unit (OBU) is mounted on each autonomous vehicle (robotaxi or robobus), which connects to different peripherals collecting vehicle data. Through an Ethernet port, the OBU is connected to the VG814 5G vehicle gateway, which transmits the data to both the operation center and mobile app over 5G cellular networks, while at the same time tracking location of the vehicle with its built-in GNSS module.
Operators can monitor the vehicle status in real time from the management center and manage the fleets accordingly. The user can check the location and status of their related vehicle and get timely notification.
Advantages:
1. Fast, uninterrupted and reliable 5G communications
The VG814 offers faster and more reliable connectivity for autonomous vehicles, enabling high-bandwidth applications like real-time video streaming and remote control. 5G networks also support low-latency communications, which is essential for safety-critical applications like autonomous driving.
2. High precision location tracking
With built-in high sensitivity GNSS system, the VG814 constantly tracks the vehicle location with high precision.
3. Easy integration to the cloud
The VG814 supports major IoT clouds such as Azure IoT and AWS, and offers plenty of APIs for third-party clouds, making it easy for users to integrate to their platforms.
4. Built for developers
The VG814 comes with an open platform for users. With support for C/C++, Python and Docker, it allows users to program their own applications according to business needs.
